We found these facts from the US Bureau of Labor Statistics alarming:

  • In the next 25 years, 45 million households will transfer $68 trillion to their children, the largest transfer of wealth in history.


Much of that wealth is tied up in businesses that will have to be sold, many at a fraction of their value, because of the following facts published by our government:

  • Did you know that 50% of US businesses fail within five years, because the businesses are NOT sustainable / repeatable.
  • Over 75% fail within 17 years. Due to lack of owners discipline, accountability and lack of a valid third party perspective.
  • >75% of businesses are owned by Baby Boomers nearing retirement & most do not have a Business Operating System (BOS)
  • Over 80% of Baby Boomer businesses are not “transaction ready”, which means they are unlikely to find a buyer and don't have the traction, sustainability & scalability to be sold.
  • Only 4-5% of all businesses listed are sold in any quarter (BizBuySell.com).
  • Of the small percentage of businesses that are successfully sold, over 70% fail to meet the expectations of the buyer.

We wanted to understand and address this, so we hired a researcher to survey 450+ businesses over four years. This helped explain the typical Life Cycle of U.S. Business and the Phases of Business Maturity, and highlighted the facts behind the largest transfer of wealth in the history of the world.  COVID-19 has created even more hurdles due to remote working and changing business models.
